The Small Things Matter!

imageSometimes, we minimize the importance of our contributions because they do not appear to be as grandeur as someone else’s offering. We will even go as far as to withhold what we have to offer because we have convinced ourselves that it is not big enough to make an impactful difference. My friends, this is a misconception that I’ve chosen to no longer allow myself to be bound or imprisoned by. God is teaching me that the simple gestures of kindness, deposits of encouraging words of empowerment & motivation, prayer, and listening ear all possess the power to ignite positive change in the lives of the recipients.
Zechariah 4:10(A)teaches us that we should not “despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin.” When we are obedient to God and do the “small things” that He places is in our heart today it makes Him smile. The knowledge that I can bring a smile upon the countenance of the one and only omnipotent God is enough to inspire me to continue planting healthy seeds in the lives of others. I will not despise my small beginning, because I know if I tend to them properly, increase and growth will come in God’s time. The same reigns true for you as well.
Friends, do what God has planted in your heart to do. God just wants to see you begin the work with the little that you have. Know that someone needs what you have to offer. What you release can save a life.

Chosen…Despite the Facts!

Don’t judge a book by its cover” is a famed metaphorical phrase which refers to the folly in prejudging the worth or value of a person or object solely based upon its outward appearance.  Generally we utilize thSheriis phrase when we are referring to something or someone other than ourselves. However, I challenge you to consider the times in your life that your self-perception was distorted based upon the appearance of your circumstances at a given point in time.

I am reminded of one of the greatest judges of Israel by the name of Gideon (see Judges 6).  His vision of himself was flawed and distorted by FACTS.  The FACTS of his life were as follows:

  1. He was struggling to provide for himself and his family as badly, if not worse than his fellow Israelites.
  2. He was spiritually in a low place. He found himself questioning the validity of God’s Word and God’s faithfulness to His people
  3. He viewed himself as being weak because of his lineage and familial position.

What a magnificent God we serve!  Despite the appearance of Gideon’s circumstances, God still looked him square in his eyes and declared him to be a “Mighty man of valor!.” The man who considered himself to be worth little was a hero in the eyes of God!

Your Word Today

You are who GOD SAYS YOU ARE!  He is not intimidated by your brokenness, your bad decisions, your negative perception of yourself, or by anyone else’s polluted opinions of you!   He has called you NOW  to effect change in your circle of influence.

I say unto you, as an orator of God, that you are a mighty man and a mighty woman of God!  The Lord IS with you!  Move full speed ahead in what He has instructed you to do and leave all of the details up to him!

That Thing Called Respect by Sharel E. Gordon-Love

sharel e gordon loveThat Thing Called Respect

Aretha Franklin sang about it, “R-E-S-P-E-C-T,” but that is not what I am talking about here. The respect that I was taught growing up for our elders and others if we wanted it in return. Simply put, “Treat others in the same way you yourself want to be treated.” The Word of God tells us, “And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also likewise to them.” Luke 6:31

To say that I have never been disrespected is not true, but when it comes from someone that you are not close to, or do not know well, the initial hurt is fleeting. However, when it is someone who you respect because of who they are or portray themselves to be, no matter the relationship, the hurt takes on a different feel…as a matter of fact, it changes from that moment forward.

Recently I experienced such blatant and open disrespect from a person who I respected fully because of who the person showed themselves to be. And they are my elder (there goes that home training!). The reasons I respected the person were many and I felt it was mutual to some degree; there was no reason to doubt that until I experienced their obvious disregard for me.

Initially, I was very hurt, but for days I could not put my finger on why until I remembered an incident that occurred some years back at my place of employment. Similar situation at which time I lost sleep trying to figure out why the hurt was so deep when my relationship with that person was only a co-worker.

I prayed about my co-worker and my feelings, trying to pinpoint why I was feeling some type of way, and the answer came to me as I stilled myself: I was hurt because I could no longer respect that person! I could only have a high opinion of the position from whence they served. This saddened me and I accepted it, but I did not like it one bit. In other words, I can no longer respect the person from my initial view and respect for them, only from the position where they serve.

Fast forward to today when my grandmother’s words especially ring in my ears. “If you want someone to treat you right, you must treat others right. If you do not treat people the way you want to be treated, then you cannot expect them to treat you like you want. It’s just that simple.” I can add to this that the respect we give out may not be returned by the person we give it to, but when it is all said and done, we are still held accountable for treating people the way we want to be treated. It’s that thing called RESPECT. Without it you can lose your witness and adversely effect lives around you.

“HE CHANGED THE FORECAST!!”

SheriWhat a comfort it is to know that we do not serve a God who is intimidated by the opinions, predictions, or forecasts of man! Scientists, meteorologists, doctors, and others may provide statistical research that would point to the immanence of a situation’s outcome based on their findings. However, Psalms 62:11 (NLT) states “God has spoken plainly, and I have heard it many times: Power, O God, belongs to you.” God has the final say in ALL THINGS.  He will change the predicted outcome to prove that He alone is in control and that He is the worker of miracles.

A couple of weeks ago, my friends and I  had planned to spend the day at the beach relaxing, soaking up the sun, and enjoying each other’s company this past Saturday. However, our plans were almost thwarted by the threat of a pending storm. The forecast, as we drew closer and closer to the day, predicted a cloudy and rainy day. I texted my friend Regina, the trip coordinator, whether or not we were going to still go based on the forecast….In faith, she replied “Yes, that’s the plan.”   She didn’t know that she was operating in faith, which in turn, would birth this insight in me.

As planned, we met and headed to Point Pleasant beach in, NJ. What a wonderful time we had! Not one drop of precipitation escaped the clouds to drench our day! It turned out to be an awesome day to go to the beach. The irony of it all was that there indeed was a storm. However, it occurred in northern, NJ where we lived, but it did not reach our intended destination!  If we would have stayed home because we feared the forecast to be true…we would have missed out on our fun in the sun!  That’s when God started speaking to me!

How many times have we let the forecasts or predictions of life paralyze us with fear from moving forward? We forget that we serve a God that will change the forecast! The forecast may speak death because of the results from the doctor office, or the impossibility of advancement because of a lack of credentials. HOWEVER, God has predetermined our destination! If He has health, wealth, deliverance, prominence, freedom, and/or healthy relationships planned for us…He will CHANGE THE FORECAST, to ensure that we reach His intended destination for our lives.

Don’t be so quick to change your plans because of what you heard in the forecast!  Operate in faith, as my friend Regina did, and move forward under the unction of the Holy Spirit. God has the final say in all things. He is not moved by nature’s roar, or by man’s opinion. He is the God of all power! He will CHANGE THE FORECAST!
