“Take a Step Back”

1 Corinthians 9:26-27

“So I run with purpose in evimg_4659ery step. I am not just shadowboxing. I discipline my body like an athlete, training it to do what it should. Otherwise, I fear that after preaching to others I myself might be disqualified”.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, as we endeavor to encourage to inspire, to motivate, to empower, to minister & to bless others; it is important that we remember our own human frailties.  Yes, we should absolutely pursue ministry & fulfilling our life’s purpose, but our main objective should always be ensuring that we are in right standing with God. How sad would it be for us to become inundated with ministry tasks such as preaching, praying for others, building & expanding, giving, visiting the sick, and such the like, and we ourselves end up missing the Promised Land? Oh,Yes!…. It can happen…just ask Moses (see: Numbers 20:9-12).

The Apostle Paul was cognoscente of the dangers of becoming so consumed with ministry tasks that it jeopardized his spiritual health. He realized that just as an athlete must keep physically fit in order to qualify to win at his sport; he too had to stay spiritually fit in order to qualify to win the crown of life that was promised to those of us who endure to the end. (See: James 1:12)

Brothers and Sisters, there comes a time when we must slow down, and simply spend time in the presence of the Lord fasting, praying, worshiping, praising, and reading the Word of God. This may mean not accepting all invitations and appointments that are offered to us. It may also mean reevaluating our calendar and shifting and canceling engagements to free us up to allow time for our own spiritual renewal.

Jesus, our Lord and Savior, also understood the need to take a break from the business of life and ministry in order to refresh himself in the presence of the Lord.. Luke 4:22 states, “and he was withdrawn from them about a stone’s cast, and kneeled down, and prayed,

Returning to the basics of relationship with God, and truly allowing him to reign as King in our hearts, will help us to remain spiritually healthy and focused. Today, I challenge you to reevaluate your schedule and determine whether or not you have left God out of it. If you have, then I encourage you to do as Christ did, withdraw yourself from it temporarily, get a stone’s cast away, kneel down, pray, and refresh yourself in God’s presence. Taking a step back will allow you to be more effective in the Kingdom.
