EXCERPT
A Woman's Worth by Tamara Angela Grant
Rochelle looked at him, eyebrow raised, curious what her husband was talking
about.
"I started going to twelve step meetings for drinking.
I realized that I couldn't fix things between us from the bottom of a bottle.
So when I've been out the past few weeks in the evening, that's where I've been,"
Tony confessed.
Rochelle's heart was suffocating from the pain. There were
so many confessions coming from Tony that she threw in her own.
"I'm happy that you've taken those steps, but please
don't think that means that all is forgiven immediately."
Rochelle continued as Tony took a seat on the bed and listened
to her speak.
"For years, I've been a wife and a mother, and God knows
that I wouldn't trade my family for anything in this world. It's just time that
I finally do something for me."
Rochelle detected the look of stress on Tony's face. "Don't
worry," she replied. "I'm not thinking of divorce or cheating on you.
All I'm saying is that I'm going to find out who Rochelle is outside of this
house. Growing up in foster care, I thought that I could make the perfect family.
You know add water and stir and magically you have this perfect family. But
I see that's not possible. We all make mistakes and bad decisions. We can just
be the best people that we can be. I'm determined to be the best mother and
wife that I can be, but I have to be the best Rochelle that I can be too."
Tony nodded. "I agree. I'm sorry. I know that I haven't
been the best husband that I could be to you and I honestly want to try to be.
You deserve that much."
Rochelle appreciated his promise, but wanted to set the ground
rules for once.
"Tony, I need you to know Rochelle. I found her and I
won't lose her again. The late nights out and the miscommunication can't be
tolerated anymore, or else our marriage won't survive."
She and Tony talked into the night, each explaining their
needs and desires to make their family stronger. Tony even agreed to come back
to church and the Lord, not only to strengthen the family, but to aid in his
alcohol recovery process as well.
For the first time in her life, Rochelle laid her head to
the pillow at the end of the night and felt some peace and stability. All this
time, she thought having the husband and the children in a beautiful home was
her stability. She finally noticed that she had to find some inner peace and
that she could find that in first God, then herself. And with that being learned,
she knew all of the other pieces of their lives would fall in line.
